Medical Fitness Test for UAE Residence Visa: Step-by-Step Guide

If you’re planning to apply for or renew a UAE residence visa, undergoing a medical fitness test is a mandatory step in the visa application process. This test ensures that expatriates entering or living in the UAE are free from communicable diseases, helping maintain public health across the emirates. Whether you’re applying through the Amer Center in Dubai, a public health screening center, or online, this guide explains everything you need to know about the medical examination process for UAE residency.

What Is the Medical Fitness Test for UAE Residency?

The medical fitness test is required for all expatriates aged 18 and above who wish to obtain a UAE residency visa—either for employment, family sponsorship, or visa renewal. The goal is to confirm the applicant is free from infectious diseases that could pose public health risks. Once the test is completed and the individual is declared medically fit, they can proceed to complete the residency visa issuance process and obtain their Emirates ID.

Step-by-Step Process to Complete the Medical Fitness Test

To take the medical fitness test in Dubai or other emirates, follow these steps:

1. Register using UAE Pass

Sign in through the UAE Pass app to verify your identity and access e-services securely.

2. Apply for the Service

Log in to the relevant portal or visit an authorized Amer Center or typing center to submit your medical screening request.

3. Pay the Fees

Complete the payment for the medical examination through online channels or in person at the center.

4. Visit the Screening Center

Visit the approved public health center or residency medical fitness center with your passport and Emirates ID.

5. Undergo Chest X-Ray

This is primarily used to detect pulmonary tuberculosis (TB).

6. Complete Blood Tests

Blood tests are conducted to screen for communicable diseases, including HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.

7. Receive Test Results

Your fitness certificate will be sent to you via SMS and email. If you are medically fit, you may continue with your residency visa process.

Health Conditions Screened During the Test

The UAE health authorities test expatriates for the following diseases:

  • HIV/AIDS
  • Pulmonary Tuberculosis (TB)
  • Leprosy
  • Hepatitis B
  • Hepatitis C

For specific professions, additional conditions apply.

Mandatory Hepatitis B Vaccination for Certain Professions

Applicants working in the following fields must undergo Hepatitis B vaccination, and pay an additional vaccination fee:

  • Nannies and domestic helpers
  • Housekeepers and maids
  • Nursery and kindergarten staff
  • Workers in salons, beauty centers, and health clubs
  • Healthcare professionals

Additional Health Screening Requirements for Certain Workers

The following categories of applicants must also test negative for syphilis and Hepatitis B:

  • Domestic workers (housemaids, drivers, nannies)
  • Childcare and nursery workers
  • Food handlers in restaurants and cafes
  • Salon and spa employees
  • Health club staff

Female domestic workers must also test negative for pregnancy during their screening.

Key Notes for Residents in Abu Dhabi and Dubai

  • In Abu Dhabi, chest x-rays are used to detect TB at the initial screening stage.
  • In Dubai, the x-ray may not be part of the initial process but may be requested depending on the case.

TB Screening for Residency Visa Renewal

As per Cabinet Resolution No. 5 of 2016, all expatriates renewing their UAE residence visa must undergo TB screening. Those found with:

  • Old TB scars
  • Active TB
  • Drug-resistant TB

...may still be issued a conditional fitness certificate, allowing one year of residency under the condition that they undergo treatment within the UAE.

Documents Required for Medical Fitness Test

Before visiting the center, make sure you have the following:

  • Valid Emirates ID or application receipt
  • Original passport
  • Service registration through UAE Pass
  • Payment confirmation or receipt
  • Authorization (Delegate Card) for companies with over 10 employees
