Sponsoring Older Children in the UAE: The 2026 Age Limit Guide

In 2026, UAE residents can legally sponsor their sons up to the age of 25, while unmarried daughters have absolutely no age limit for sponsorship. These rules apply across all emirates under the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) Dubai. For years, expatriate parents faced the stressful reality of having to secure independent employment or university visas for their children the moment they turned 18. Today, the UAE's updated family visa framework provides massive relief, allowing young adults to remain under their parents' sponsorship while they complete their education or begin their careers. Here is the exact breakdown of the rules, requirements, and required documents for sponsoring older children in the UAE.

The Age Limit Rules: Sons vs. Daughters

The age thresholds for sponsoring dependents rely entirely on gender and marital status. These rules, formalized under Cabinet Resolution No. 65 of 2022, apply to standard 2-year and 3-year residence visas.

  • Sponsor Son Visa UAE 25 Years: You can sponsor your son until his 25th birthday. He does not need to be enrolled in a university, and he does not need to prove student status. Once he turns 25, his visa cannot be renewed under your family sponsorship, and he must transition to his own work, student, or Green visa.
  • Sponsor Daughter Visa UAE No Age Limit: Parents can sponsor their daughters indefinitely. There is absolutely no upper age limit, provided the daughter remains unmarried.
  • Children of Determination: Children with special needs or disabilities can be sponsored indefinitely, regardless of gender or age, subject to medical certification.
  • Golden Visa Exception: If the parent holds a 10-year Golden Visa, the 25-year age cap for sons is completely removed. Golden Visa holders can sponsor both sons and daughters of any age.

New Requirements for Children Over 18

While the sponsorship age has been extended, the GDRFA and ICP require additional administrative steps once your child turns 18.

1. The Medical Fitness Test

Children under 18 are exempt from the medical fitness exam. However, the moment your son or daughter turns 18, they must pass a DHA-approved medical fitness test (screening for communicable diseases) to issue or renew their residence visa.

2. The Unmarried Undertaking Letter (For Daughters)

Because there is no age limit for unmarried daughters, GDRFA Dubai requires the sponsoring parent to sign an "unmarried undertaking" letter during the online application for any daughter aged 18 or older. In some cases, proof of unmarried status from the courts may be requested.

Minimum Salary and Required Documents

To sponsor your children, you must earn a minimum monthly salary of AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus employer-provided accommodation. Your profession title does not matter, as long as you meet the financial threshold. To apply for or renew the visa for an adult child, you will need:

  • Sponsor’s original Emirates ID and passport copy.
  • Child’s passport copy (valid for at least 6 months) and a recent passport-sized photo with a white background.
  • Attested birth certificate of the child.
  • Registered Tenancy Contract (Ejari) in the sponsor's name.
  • Recent salary certificate or labor contract.
  • Signed unmarried undertaking letter (for daughters 18+).
